Description
A rocky outcrop of huge cracked boulders forms a table top that supports an enclave of pine trees and alpine flowers. Behind this brave outpost of evergreens, rise sheer rock walls with glacier remnants clinging to the upper ledges. Expansive mounds of rubble lay below the cliffs creating huge scree or talus slopes that continue to grow and shift as chunks of rock from above break off the ledges and cliff faces and tumble to the ground. During the spring and summer, melting snow from the snow pack and ice from the glacier melts. These rivulets plunge over the ledges and run down the steep sides eroding the limestone. Some rivulets combine to form waterfalls. Often the water will drain through the gravel at the bottom and reappear as streams far below. In some cases the streams pool and vegetation takes root creating a patchwork of vegetation islands consisting of pines, other evergreens, and various hardy alpine plants, some of which produce colorful alpine flowers that attract insects and various birds and animals.
