Description
Glacier Tongue Scours The Valley Far Below: Your eye picks out detail of the trees and the grassy ridge in the foreground and at first glance might see sky and clouds in the background. But on closer inspection you start to make out the shapes below. Beyond the rolling, deceptively gentle looking grassy ridge, the real estate quickly becomes more steep and plunges several thousand feet to the valley floor where a massive tongue of ice pulverizes the rock, grinding it into gravel while at the same time, the afternoon heat is melting the ice, releasing rivulets which snake through the gravel joining with others to become rushing streams careening down the slopes carrying mountains of silt and sand and pebbles. There is a haze in the air from all the moisture and at this distance it partially veils the sheer rock walls in the top left and right of the picture that rise straight up and are equally as high as the mountains on this side of the valley. It is truly awe inspiring. Everything is changing and transforming. Nothing stays the same. Copyright Greg Hammond. All rights reserved.
