Mother Natures Canvas: This old larch tree has withstood freezing winter temperatures of minus 40 degrees, searing summer heat, torrential rain, heavy snow, golf ball hail, and cloaks of ice, as it faithfully kept watch over this spectacular panoramic valley for decades. A few weeks earlier, when it dropped all its golden needles, the ground was completely blanketed by a soft gilded carpet. This looks like an oil painting by Mother Nature herself on an enormous canvas. Wherever I go I am on alert for those fleeting moments when the world reveals a special image with that magical combination of atmosphere, texture, character, and purity, cleverly disguised and woven into the fabric of the every day. Sometime you only have a split second to capture it. Sometime … maybe once every 1,000 times … you get it just right and are able to record and preserve an exquisite visual memento that otherwise would have vanished, lost forever in the relentless motion of space, light, and time.
